Warmer daytime temperatures are expected in central and southern regions, though rain seems to be on the horizon. Wednesday could see a notable drop in temperatures due to an advancing cold front from the mainland, increasing the chances of light, localized showers in the north and east. From Thursday through election day on Saturday, residents can expect stable and clear weather, albeit with a touch of chill in the mornings and nights. However, the cold air mass is expected to weaken throughout the day, leading to a gradual warming trend with temperatures potentially reaching over 20 degrees Celsius. The CWA also predicts a strengthening of the northeast monsoon on Thursday, which will cause another dip in temperatures, particularly on the windward side of northern Taiwan. However, this effect is expected to be short-lived, with milder temperatures forecasted for Friday and Saturday. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of a new cold air mass moving south by Sunday, which could once again lower temperatures in northern Taiwan.

In Yilan county, four out of six people rushed to the hospital due to the cold were declared deceased. Emergency cases surged in Changhua County, with seven unsuccessful resuscitations. Only 10 people who collapsed due to the cold have been resuscitated. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions against the chilly weather.

The Yilan County government has passed a proposal to increase the baby bonus in an effort to combat a declining birth rate. The bonus will be increased from NT＄12,000 to NT＄15,000 and is expected to take effect in 2024.

This year’s sixth typhoon, Typhoon Khanun, brought heavy winds and rain to Taiwan over the past week. The storm came closest to Taiwan late Thursday evening, resulting in a ＂typhoon day off＂ for the greater Taipei area and Yilan County. 

Following the cancellation of work and classes in Taipei, New Taipei City, Keelung, and Yilan County due to Typhoon Khanun, KTV chains in the Greater Taipei area experienced a surge in bookings on Wednesday (Aug. 3). 

Local authorities are diligently continuing their search on Monday (May 29) for a female middle school student who went missing after being swept into the ocean a day earlier. The incident occurred at Neipi Beach near Nanfang’ao in Yilan County.
